Gao Yaojie, courtesy name of Gao Mingkui (Chinese: 高明魁), was a Chinese gynecologist, academic, and AIDS activist based in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. Gao was honoured for her work by the United Nations and Western organizations whilst spending time under house arrest. Her split with the Chinese authorities on the transmission and the seriousness of the AIDS epidemic in the People's Republic of China hindered her further activities, and she left for the United States in 2009, where she settled in Manhattan, New York.

Deng Tuo, also known by the pen name Ma Nancun (Chinese: 马南邨; pinyin: Mǎ Náncūn), was a Chinese poet, intellectual and journalist. He became a cadre of the Chinese Communist Party and served as editor-in-chief of the People's Daily from 1948 to 1958. He committed suicide in 1966 following scathing criticism in the People's Daily, as the Cultural Revolution was beginning.

Bai Shouyi, also known as Djamal al-Din Bai Shouyi, was a Chinese ethnologist, historian, social activist, and writer who revolutionized recent Chinese historiography and pioneered in relying heavily on scientific excavations and reports. A Marxist philosophically, his studies thus take a very class-centric view and reasoning. Born a son of a Hui merchant in Kaifeng, he became literate in Arabic from his mother and aunt.

Jiao Guobiao is a Chinese dissident who was formerly an associate professor at Peking University's College of Journalism and Communications until he was dismissed. A prominent journalist at Chinese Cultural Newspaper from 1996 to 2001, he has published widely on issues of journalism in China. Following the appearance online of his March 2004 essay condemning the Chinese government's Central Propaganda Department (Denouncing the Central Propaganda Department) and his continued efforts to promote freedom of the press and human rights in China, he was suspended from his teaching duties.
