Japanese basis applicants: A score of 240 points or more for level 1, or 280 points or more for level 2 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). English basis applicants: A score of 500 points or more of the paper-based TOEFL (or 173 and 61 for computer-based and internet-based respectively), or a score of 5.5 or higher on the IELTS (Academic).
