She was appointed Minister of Education of the Government of Catalonia by President Carles Puigdemont on 14 July 2017, and was dismissed by the Spanish Government pursuant to Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution on 27 October 2017, due to the organisation of the 2017 Catalan independence referendum and the subsequent declaration of independence. On 30 October 2017, she went into exile in Brussels together with Carles Puigdemont and three other members of his government, Lluís Puig, Antoni Comín and Meritxell Serret. In May 2018, she returned to the University of St Andrews (Scotland) as a professor. In the 2019 Spanish municipal elections, she was placed last on the list of the candidacy Barcelona és capital - Primàries, led by Jordi Graupera. From February 2020 to July 2024 she was a Member of the European Parliament within the Junts i Lliures per Europa grouping.

    Enric Marco Batlle was a Catalan impostor and former trade unionist who claimed to have been imprisoned by Nazi Germany in the Flossenbürg concentration camp during World War II. Born in Barcelona, Marco had volunteered to go to Germany as a foreign worker and was never interned in a concentration camp. Following the Spanish transition to democracy, after a brief time serving as the general secretary of the National Confederation of Labour (CNT), Marco gained recognition for his stories of surviving the Holocaust. He was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi by the Catalan government and became president of the Amical de Mauthausen, an organisation of Spanish victims of Nazism. In 2005, he was exposed as an impostor and forced to resign his post and renounce his awards. Marco remained unrepentant for his actions, justifying them as necessary to preserve the collective memory of the Holocaust, although he was widely criticised by Spanish Holocaust survivors.
