He served as head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He currently serves as a senior consultant in the Boston Celtics front office.

He made documentary films for PBS, and won a Peabody Award for Safe Haven in 1987. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1989 and worked for CNN.
