Prithviraj Chavan is an Indian politician who was the 17th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Chavan is a graduate of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and University of California, Berkeley in mechanical engineering. He spent time working in the field of aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US before returning to India and becoming an entrepreneur in 1974. Chang Professor of Computer Science in the School of Engineering at Columbia University. He was previously the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and the Director of the Hyderabad Campus of the BITS-Pilani University. As director, he was regarded as being instrumental in the establishment of the Hyderabad Campus.
