    Rıza Nur was a Turkish surgeon, politician and writer. He was prominent in the years immediately after the First World War, where he served as a cabinet minister but was subsequently marginalised, and became a critic of Atatürk. His acclaimed autobiography Hayat ve Hatıratım was written from exile in France and Egypt as an alternative narrative to Atatürk's famous speech Nutuk that has dominated the historiography of Turkey. Like Halide Edib and Rauf Orbay, Rıza Nur's work is part of a body of early Republican literature that sought plurality in the increasingly authoritarian Turkish Republic.

    Besim Ömer Akalın was a Turkish social democratic politician and physician who established modern obstetrics and gynaecology in Turkey and was the director of the Turkish Red Crescent society.     Akil Muhtar Özden, was a Turkish physician known for being the pioneer of experimental pharmacology in Turkey. He was educated at the Medical School of Geneva, whereupon graduation worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and prepared a doctoral thesis on ‘‘Long Lasting Cerebrospinal Meningitis’. He carried out research on ‘chloralose’ and 'opium alkaloids’. In 1909, he was appointed to the Civil Medical School of Istanbul as a lecturer and embarked on a long career of medical teaching until his retirement in 1943. After his retirement, Özden continued working in the medical field and had a short stint as a senator in the parliament.
