Li Wenliang was a Chinese Manchurian ophthalmologist who warned his colleagues about early COVID-19 infections in Wuhan. On 30 December 2019, Wuhan CDC issued emergency warnings to local hospitals about a number of mysterious "pneumonia" cases discovered in the city in the previous week. On the same day, Li, who worked at the Central Hospital of Wuhan, received an internal diagnostic report of a suspected severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patient from other doctors which he in turn shared with his Wuhan University alumni through a WeChat group. He was dubbed a whistleblower when that shared report later circulated publicly despite his requesting confidentiality from those with whom he shared the information. Rumors of a deadly SARS outbreak subsequently spread on Chinese social media platforms; Wuhan police summoned and admonished him and seven other doctors on 3 January for "making false comments on the Internet about unconfirmed SARS outbreak."

Fang Fang, pen name of Wang Fang (汪芳; born 11 May 1955), is a Chinese writer, known for her literary depictions of the working poor. She won the Lu Xun Literary Prize in 2010. Born in Nanjing, she attended Wuhan University in 1978 to study Chinese. In 1975, she began to write poetry and in 1982, her first novel was published. She has since written several novels, some of which have been honored by Chinese national-level literary prizes. Fang garnered international attention for her Wuhan Diary, documenting the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, and has used her platform to call for an end to internet censorship in China.

Li Hanjun was an alternate member of the 3rd Central Executive Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. He was the younger brother of Li Shucheng. Born in Hubei Province, he studied abroad in Japan from 1902 to 1918, graduating from University of Tokyo. He was fluent in Japanese, English, French and German. Although a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party, he later left the party after coming into conflict with Zhang Guotao and joined the Kuomintang. An opponent of Chiang Kai-shek's anti-Communist campaign, he fled to the Japanese concession in Hankou when Chiang's supporters entered Wuhan in November 1927. He was captured by the New Guangxi clique and murdered.
