She grew up with a strong interest in horses, and was mentored in horsemanship by Mary "Sid" Spencer, a local rancher and Morgan horse breeder who also introduced Varian to the vaquero or "Californio" tradition of western riding. Merlin set and held the course record between 1977 and 1997, making the 1977 crossing in only 8 days, 11 hours and 1 minute.

Edward Lasquete is a Filipino Pole Vaulter who competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. At the Olympics, he was not able to make a podium finish, but set a National Record in Pole Vault by registering a record of 5.0 meters.
